Dangerous Foods for Dogs

With the Easter holiday upon us, I thought I'd share some foods that are dangerous to our four legged furry friends.  According to WebMD, here is a list of some of the foods that are not safe to feed pets:
  • Avocado
  • Alcohol (beer, liquor, wine, etc.)
  • Onions and Garlic
  • Coffee, Tea and other caffeine
  • Grapes, Raisins, Persimmons, Peaches, Plums
  • Milk and other Dairy Products
  • Macadamia nuts, Candy, Gum, Chocolate
  • Fat Trimmings and Bones
  • Raw Eggs, Raw Meat, Raw Fish
  • Salt, Sugary Foods and Drinks
  • Yeast Dough

The website also gives a list of spices kept in pantry cupboards that will harm animals and also suggests against giving dogs medicines designed for humans, as they can be harmful also.  It then goes on to suggest certain human foods and fruits that are ok to give to animals.  If you’d like to read the article in more detail the website is:

Dangerous Foods That Dogs Should Never Eat

  1. Bones? I've heard that chicken and turkey bones are bad because they splinters, but I've never heard that it was unsafe for dogs to to have soup bones... intersting. We don't have dogs but I have had them in the past.

  2. I was surprised to see raw meat on the list. There's a whole movement on raw feeding for dogs raw for better health (http://www.shalako.com/diet.htm). Looks like a happy dog meeting the Easter Bunny!

  3. We don't give Jasper any soup bones. My husband would toss Jasper raw venison during hunting season while he was processing what he had brought home and Jasper wound up having seizures. After a very expensive trip to the emergency vet, we found out that the seizures were due to the enzimes in the raw meat. They also suggested no pork (cooked or otherwise) so we have to check the labels on every bag of dog food and dog treats we buy and make sure they dont contain pork of any kind.
